DAY 1 OF IFTRA 2026 CONFERENCE SETS THE STAGE FOR GLOBAL EDUCATION TRANSFORMATION 🌍📚
Day 1 of the IFTRA 9th Biennial World Conference concluded successfully in Boksburg, South Africa, bringing together distinguished education leaders, teaching councils, policymakers, researchers, and global stakeholders from across the world under the theme:
“Strengthening the Teaching Profession and Teaching Councils.”
The conference was officially declared open by the Minister of Basic Education, South Africa, Honourable Siviwe Gwarube, serving as the Special Guest of Honour. In her opening address, the Minister emphasised the critical role of teachers in shaping future generations and highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strengthening education systems globally.
The opening proceedings featured insightful contributions from international speakers and education leaders who reflected on the future of teacher professionalism, leadership, governance, and regulation within evolving global education systems.
Lead Speaker Linda Lacroix, Chief Executive & Registrar of the Ontario College of Teachers, Canada, delivered a powerful overview of the conference theme, reinforcing the importance of ethical leadership, strong professional standards, and global partnerships in advancing the teaching profession.
Guest speakers and panel discussions throughout the day explored key topics including:
• Teacher professionalism and governance models
• The Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 2026–35)
• Teacher professional development in Africa
• Strategic international partnerships and collaboration
• Ethical leadership and regulatory innovation
• Teacher wellbeing, foundational learning, and education research
Panel sessions brought together experts from Africa, Europe, North America, and Australia, to exchange best practices, share research findings, and engage on solutions aimed at strengthening teaching councils and education systems internationally.
The day concluded with dynamic parallel sessions that created space for deeper engagement on critical education issues, including teacher management systems, digital knowledge-sharing, regulatory functions, internationalisation of teacher education, and teacher wellbeing.
Day 1 of IFTRA 2026 successfully established a strong foundation for continued dialogue, collaboration, and collective action towards building a resilient, future-ready, and globally respected teaching profession.

Guest Speaker Dr. Thomas Poirier, Project Team Leader for the Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA), delivered an insightful presentation on optimising regional partnerships to strengthen the teaching profession across Africa. 🌍📚
His address highlighted the importance of collaboration between the European Union, UNESCO, the African Union, and partner countries in supporting teacher development, policy innovation, and sustainable education systems.
The session reinforced the value of strategic global partnerships in advancing quality education and empowering teachers across the continent.
