DUT Celebrates International Research Success!
The Durban University of Technology proudly congratulates PhD candidate and staff member, Mr Thembinkosi Peter Kalanga, on his remarkable achievement at the 5th BRICS Postgraduate Forum held in Brazil from 9–11 June 2026.
Mr Kalanga successfully submitted three research papers and presented his study, “Municipalities as Strategic Enablers of Waste Entrepreneurship in BRICS Economies: A Qualitative Desktop Study.” His research explores how municipalities can support entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic growth across BRICS nations.
His outstanding contribution earned him:
Best Paper in Session – PhD
Certificate of Achievement – Second Runner-Up PhD
Mr Kalanga expressed gratitude to DUT, the Faculty of Management Sciences, his supervisor Prof Pfano Mashau, the BRICS Research Institute, and the conference organisers for their support.

In a major boost for research, innovation and skills development, DUT has been awarded 𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐡𝐈 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬 by the NRF under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation Decadal Plan.
The Chairs were launched alongside 41 new national appointments by Minister Blade Nzimande, strengthening research capacity across South Africa’s universities.
This milestone reflects DUT’s growing research excellence and its commitment to addressing societal challenges through impactful research aligned with ENVISION2030.
