South Africa won political freedom. But has economic freedom reached enough people?
In this powerful eNCA discussion, REGENT Business School’s Academic Dean, Dr Shahiem Patel, speaks to one of the most important questions facing the country today: how do we move from freedom in principle to opportunity in practice?
From education and skills development to entrepreneurship and economic participation, this conversation challenges us to think differently about what real progress requires.

Political freedom was won. Economic freedom is still a fight. 🇿🇦
As South Africa commemorates Youth Day, REGENT Business School reflects on the courage of the youth of 1976 and the very different struggle facing young people today.
According to Stats SA, 60.9% of South Africans aged 15 to 24 were unemployed in the first quarter of 2026, while 37.6% were not in employment, education or training.
Today’s youth are not facing the same visible enemy as 1976. They are navigating unemployment, inequality, corruption, weak growth, digital disruption and an economy that often asks for experience from people who have not yet been given the opportunity to gain it.
The article, written by Dr Shahiem Patel, Academic Dean at REGENT Business School, argues that qualifications still matter, but they are no longer enough on their own. The next phase must be about converting learning into thinking, skills into income, qualifications into economic agency and education into real opportunity.
It also calls for stronger entrepreneurship ecosystems, AI literacy, work-integrated learning and deeper employer-education partnerships that help young people move into work, enterprise and further learning.
This Youth Month, the question is not only what freedom was won, but what we are prepared to build next.
