In the Serengeti, scattered across Tanzania's endless grass plains, there are ancient granite outcrops called kopjes. They rise like rocky islands above the flatlands, and lions have claimed them for thousands of years. The highest points for surveying the land. The deep crevices for hiding cubs from hyenas. The cool breezes for resting through the heat of the afternoon.

The largest of these is called Simba Kopjes.

Simba is the Swahili word for lion. This place was named for the animal long before any film studio existed. And yet when Disney set out to create The Lion King in 1994, they looked to these exact formations for inspiration. Pride Rock was not invented. It was borrowed from a real place where real lions have stood for longer than anyone can measure.

The father and cub you see in this photograph are not characters. They are not props. They are standing exactly where their ancestors stood, on the same ancient granite, under the same African sky.

Disney told the story. Nature had already been living it.
