The birth world is full of people trying to sound certain.
Confident.
Empowering.
Expert enough.

Meanwhile women are quietly drowning in shame, grief, confusion and stories they don’t know what to do with.

The birth space does not need more polished personalities.
Or people trying to curate the image of being the “perfect” birth expert.

It needs more people who can sit in the complexity of birth without bypassing it.

More people who don’t panic when a woman says:
“I think my birth broke something in me.”

More people who understand that not every wound is caused by an emergency.
And not every “positive” birth feels okay afterwards.

And while systemic problems in maternity care absolutely exist…
simply villainising the medical system is not the same thing as helping someone heal.

Because sometimes women still carry pain after a medically necessary birth.
Sometimes they feel conflicted.
Sometimes they feel gratitude and grief.
Sometimes the deepest wound is not what was done to them, but the meaning they made about themselves afterwards.

Women do not need birth workers who only know how to blame, reassure or repeat trendy talking points.

They need people who know how to truly listen.
How to stay present.
How to work with stories, identity, grief, disappointment, rage, guilt and meaning.

That’s part of what we teach in Part 1.

Not scripts.
Not saviourism.
Not simplistic answers.

The deeper human skills birth work has been missing.

What Is The Cascade Of Intervention?
Sometimes, the reason we need these riskier birth interventions is because we have chosen a small intervention, which has led to a bigger intervention, which has then led to a riskier intervention.

This is known as the cascade of intervention.

When you choose even a small intervention and, as a direct result, another intervention becomes necessary, you’ve fallen into the cascade of intervention.

This resonates profoundly with me, but do bear in mind that discomfort and hard work, as is implied by the word "labour" does not equate to suffering.

I believe the below is meant as a reminder that you have immense strength within you and that this strength is developed as you mature in motherhood♥️

"As a society, we are so uncomfortable with being uncomfortable. We desperately try to bypass being uncomfortable and we measure our success by how well we are able to do so."

You and your baby have a unique and perfect feeding rhythm. Do yourself a favour and remove the word "schedule" from your vocabulary while you have a newborn to nurture ♥️

Birth can be straightforward and joyful ♥️

Homebirth sparks the evolution of mothers, fathers and children. And when families evolve, humanity evolves with them.

Just another day for the ordinarily extraordinary birth of baby number three at home. An hour after birth…
siblings swimming in the pool that Mum never ended up birthing in. Midwives washing the dishes and folding the washing. Dad clearing away the dirty laundry. Grandma quietly soaking up her exposure to a whole new world of birth.

And Mum…
sitting peacefully in the corner, feeding her brand new babe.

The quiet ordinariness of life continuing, while everything has just changed.

What a blessing it is to stand beside families like this. Families who have evolved from their first birth in hospital into two redemptive homebirths.

Witnessing the unfolding of a family remembering their power is one of the greatest privileges of my life.
