RECAP | On 5 June 2026, Umalusi successfully hosted the farewell function of the 6th Umalusi Council, whose term ended on 7 June 2026.

🚨 IMPORTANT NOTICE: BLOCKED ID NUMBERS 🚨

Do you have a blocked South African ID number? The Department of Home Affairs has launched a nationwide campaign to assist individuals whose IDs were blocked before November 2022. Affected persons are encouraged to visit their nearest Home Affairs office and submit representations explaining why their ID should be unblocked before 10 July 2026. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the affected identity number.

We hosted the farewell function of the 6th Umalusi Council last evening in Pretoria. The term of this Council is coming to an end on 7 June 2026.

Addressing the Council members and other stakeholders, the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Siviwe Gwarube, said "...having reviewed the work undertaken during your tenure, I can confidently say that the Sixth Council not only preserved that legacy [of your predecessors] but strengthened it."

Minister Gwarube further highlighted that the farewell "also serves as a moment to reflect on the importance of Umalusi's role within South Africa's education system, adding that this year is particularly significant as Umalusi celebrates 25 years of existence.

This 6th Umalusi Council was established on 8 June 2022 upon the appointment by the Minister of Basic Education in terms of the General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance (GENFETQA) Act, (No. 58 of 2001), as amended.
