There is widespread evidence that glaciers are retreating in many mountain areas of the world. For example, since 1850 the glaciers of the European Alps have lost about 30 to 40% of their surface area and about half of their volume

In their latest report the IEA forsees that by 2030 the world will be emitting about 45 Gt (gigatonnes) of carbon dioxide. Yet, in 2008, just 4 years ago the IEA was projecting 40 Gt CO2 for 2030. Where did the extra projected 5 Gt CO2 for 2030 (just about equal to an extra United States) come from over the past 4 years?

Actively managing the water pressure translates into an ongoing reduction of water loss through leaks and burst pipes. Preliminary investigations have indicated that a reduction of 40% in pipe bursts is possible. In the Durban CBD, this advanced controller was utilised to lower the minimum night flow from 599 m3/hr to 352 m3/hr that equates to almost 6 Ml/day.

When C02 dissolves in the seawater it reacts to form a number of ionic and non-ionic carbon species depending on the temprature and alkalinity. The net effect is to increase the concentration of hydrogen ions and reduce the concentration of carbonate ions. More hydrogen ions means lower PH and more acidic conditions, so as more and more C02 dissolves into the ocean, the ocean is becoming more and more acidic.

There are fewer measurements of C02 concentrations and fluxes in the Southern Ocean than in the Northern Hemisphere oceans. The latter is extensively studied due to a higher intensity of commercial shipping.
