“The most sustainable style is already here.”

Three women reveal the beauty, politics, and pleasure of second‑hand fashion, showing how re‑use can be both an ethical practice and a powerful form of self‑expression.

From the director Mehita Iqani’s statement: “This film began with a simple, stubborn conviction: there are already enough clothes in the world: enough beauty, enough possibility, enough material to dress ourselves joyfully without shopping for anything new. That truth is tangled inside global systems of excess, inequality, waste, and longing. I wanted to make a film that could hold all that complexity while still honouring the pleasure that clothing brings.”

Fashion Dump will be premiering 📹in Johannesburg on the 27th of June at the Bioscope and on the 5th of July at the L***a Theatre in Cape Town.

🎫Tickets are running out fast! Be sure to get yours at the link in our bio, so you don’t miss out on this.

What if the most powerful fashion statement is wearing what already exists? 🤔

A sneak peek behind the scenes with our three fashionistas, Madinani, Jacky, and Philli. Fashion Dump is a short documentary that explores second-hand style as creativity, self-expression and as a quiet rebellion against throwaway culture.

“I wanted to make a film that celebrates beauty without denial, critique without despair, and fashion without forgetting where our clothes come from. If it shifts how we look at what we wear, even slightly, then it has done its work.” Director, Mehita Iqani.

The film will be screened in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Tickets are now available:

[NEW PUBLICATION ALERT] What stories do anti-littering campaigns tell us about responsibility? In this article, Prof Mehita Iqani looks at how South African anti-littering advertisements construct narratives of personal responsibility, putting individuals as the main agents accountable for waste and environmental degradation.

Tracing a shift from earlier “Zibi” campaigns to more recent messaging featuring “Bingo”, the article shows how anti-littering adverts have changed over time, but still focus mostly on individual behaviour.

This article adds to discussions in media and communication studies by showing how environmental messages shape who we think is responsible for waste, and highlights the gap between individual responsibility and larger systems that also play a role in pollution and waste management.
