Chenin Blanc has a natural affinity for oak when handled with restraint. The variety’s acidity provides structure, allowing it to carry wood influence without losing definition.

Oak can introduce texture, subtle spice and a broader mid-palate, while Chenin’s fruit profile remains intact. When balanced correctly, the result is not dominated by wood, but rather shaped by it – adding dimension without overshadowing origin.

As pruning will start to begin in the coming months, vineyards enter one of the most important stages of the growing cycle. This process determines how the vine will grow in the season ahead, influencing yield, canopy structure and ultimately fruit quality.

For Chenin Blanc, careful pruning helps manage vigour and balance, setting the foundation for even ripening. It is methodical work that rarely draws attention, yet plays a defining role in the wines that follow - the canopy management of the vines often dictates the pruning style, the two go hand-in-hand much like South Africa and Chenin Blanc.

Chenin Blanc holds a unique place in South Africa, and for some producers, it has become a singular focus. Rijk’s is one such example, specialising in Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, with a long-standing commitment to understanding these varieties in depth.

Over time, they have worked with both bush vines and trellised vineyards, each contributing something different. Bush vines tend to yield lower volumes of more concentrated fruit, while trellised vines bring brighter, fruit-forward character. Underpinning it all is a simple belief – that the quality of the wine is determined long before it reaches the cellar.

This is Chenin Blanc at its broadest and most expressive - all in one place.

Chenin Blanc continues to find expression in remarkable places. This wine, produced in Mendoza by the daughter of the Catena Zapata family, offers an insightful look at how the variety responds to altitude and soil.

Grown on alluvial soils at 1500 metres above sea level, the wine carries both freshness and concentration, moulded by warm days, cool nights and slow ripening conditions. Serious in structure yet effortlessly drinkable, it’s another reminder of Chenin Blanc’s ability to translate landscape with striking clarity, no matter where in the world it is planted.
