ICU STUDENTS SHOWCASED AI PROJECTS AT BONGOHIVE EVENT
The Information and Communications University (ICU) students participated in the second BongoHive AI Lab Show & Tell session held in Lusaka, where they showcased locally developed artificial intelligence solutions aimed at addressing real-world challenges.
The ICU delegation included Innocent Mugwadi (BSc Software Engineering), Ruth Mwenya (BSc ICT), Martha Kapasha (BSc ICT), and Ezra Masheka (BSc Information Security and Computer Forensics). The students presented innovative AI projects that demonstrated practical applications of machine learning, software engineering, and digital problem-solving.
Among the projects showcased were Lucid AI, an offline large language model designed for academic and research use in low-connectivity environments, and an Autism Spectrum Disorder screening tool powered by machine learning to support early clinical assessment.
The participation reflectes ICU’s growing emphasis on hands-on innovation, research, and contribution to Zambia’s emerging artificial intelligence ecosystem.

ICU, ZAMBIA POLICE SEAL STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP
The Information and Communications University (ICU) and the Zambia Police Service (ZPS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation in education, research, innovation, and professional development. The partnership is expected to enhance collaboration between the two institutions while promoting skills development and knowledge sharing.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, ICU Vice Chancellor Prof. Serah Kalambo Mbetwa said the agreement is not merely a procedural formality, but a moment to lay a foundation for a transformative partnership. She noted that the two institutions are not simply signing a document, but forging a partnership that has the potential to redefine the relationship between higher education, research, innovation, and public security in Zambia.
According to the agreement, the two institutions will collaborate on capacity building initiatives, tailor-made training programmes, conferences, workshops, seminars, and public lectures designed to improve knowledge and skills among law enforcement personnel. The Memorandum of Understanding also seeks to strengthen digital transformation and Information and Communication Technology capacity within the Zambia Police Service, while creating opportunities for internships, industrial attachments, and practical training for students where applicable.
Inspector General of Police Mr. Graphel C. Musamba said the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding represents more than a formal agreement, but two institutions coming together in a shared commitment to knowledge, innovation, professional excellence, and national development. He noted that as crime continues to evolve in today's rapidly changing society, modern policing must go beyond traditional crime prevention and law enforcement by embracing education, research, and innovation.
Additionally, the partnership will support community outreach programmes, crime prevention initiatives, leadership development, and innovation projects aimed at improving service delivery and contributing to national development. The collaboration is also expected to advance research in areas such as cyber security, forensic science, criminology, and public safety.
