As the world comes together in commemoration of The International Day of the African Child which takes place on June 16, 2016, under the theme “Conflict and Crisis in Africa: Protecting all Children’s Rights”

We take the time to look at some of the young heroes in the Zimbabwean communities that have beaten the odds while most lament at the lack of opportunities and resources.

We reflect on the likes of, Maud Chifamba, an orphan and rare academic brilliance, who managed to attain 12 points in 2011 when she was 13. She went on to do her Accounting Degree at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and is one unique person with a very sharp mind.

Other names that continue to come to mind of orphans and vulnerable children who have inspired young people for generations to come would be Malcom X and Steve Jobs.

pachikoro-jnr-mayor-boazThe words from Jim George “It’s not how you start that’s important, but how you finish!” best describe the young person we focus on today, Boaz Chisiri.

Boaz was born on the 11th August, 1996 in Chipinge, he attended his primary level at Beacon Primary School and later came to Rose of Sharon in Ruwa at the age of ten as an orphan.

“A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step”, Boaz’s favorite quote is in more ways than one a true depiction of his life story highlighted. A joyful young man who is quite confident and articulate. A will to overcome and tremendous courage saw him pass his O-Levels with 7 subjects and going on to study Accounts, Economics and Management of Business Studies at Rose of Sharon run by Dr. Fatima Maruta.

Boaz’s hard working ethics and belief that the sky is the limit regardless of his background saw him being inaugurated as 2015/2016 Junior Mayor of Ruwa Town Council.

“After passing my A-level I hope to improve the social conditions, health, development, and quality of life of vulnerable orphans and children in my community. I also want to encourage people that they are created for a purpose, and that they have meaning and significance in this world” said Boaz with a beaming smile.

Boaz’s life is a great inspiration, among other endevours he wishes to persue he is an aspiring human rights defender and preacher advocating against racial discrimination. Boaz thanks God for what he has achieved so far in life and also for what he is going to achieve. Many thanks to Dr Fatima Maruta for helping him in getting his education and accomplishing many things in life.

He is truly a role model, voice for the voiceless and hope to his peers.

The own your rubbish exhibition currently running at the National Gallery is both an example of what you can do by upcycling and reusing our rubbish as well as a shout for people to be more responsible about how to dispose of rubbish.

The exhibition which runs from the 20th of May to the 20th of June is the initiative of photographer and creative director, Laurie Macpherson, who is working with the Zee-Bag Project, Shingirirai Trust, the Happy Organisation and the Hope Group, as well as 12 individual local artists using the ‘medium’ of rubbish and found objects.

The aims of the exhibition are to conscientise and educate the people about our personal responsibility to the rubbish we generate and improve attitudes and behavior regarding this important local and global environmental issue. To promote artists and crafts people by – showcasing their work and improving their skills, giving training on new product lines and giving them visibility and economic security.

European Union (EU) ambassador to Zimbabwe, Philippe Van Damme who officially opened the exhibition said “not only does the Own Your Rubbish Project teach us how to protect the environment and how to use our skills to earn a living, it also passes an important message of individual and collective responsibility for our plant. Through art and taking a responsibility of our lives and everything consequential to our actions.”

The project is being funded by the European Union through the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe

"Motivation is the art of getting people to do what you want them to do because they want to do it." - Dwight D. Eisenhower
"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing that's why we recommend it daily." - Zig Ziglar

"The heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight, But they, while their companions slept, Were toiling upward in the night." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
"The majority of men meet with failure because of their lack of persistence in creating new plans to take the place of those which fail." - Napoleon Hill

"The whole idea of motivation is a trap. Forget motivation. Just do it. Exercise, lose weight, test your blood sugar, or whatever. Do it without motivation. And then, guess what? After you start doing the thing, that's when the motivation comes and makes it easy for you to keep on doing it." - John Maxwell
"There's always the motivation of wanting to win. Everybody has that. But a champion needs, in his attitude, a motivation above and beyond winning." - Pat Riley

GOVERNMENT is set to recruit hundreds of science and mathematics teachers who were failing to secure jobs despite a serious shortage of qualified staff due to massive brain drain.

While several schools do not have such personnel, it emerged that several university graduates were roaming the streets and failing to get jobs, hence the call by the Ministry of Education for them (graduates) to register with the relevant authorities.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education called on holders of the Diploma in Science Education, Bachelor of Science Education and Diploma in Education in various disciplines of science, who were not employed, to report to respective district offices.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Patrick Zumbo, said the call was in line with efforts to reduce the shortage of qualified teachers.

“The ministry has a shortfall of 1 521 maths and science teachers and it has since been realised that there are some with qualifications, but not employed,” he said.

“What is happening now is different from how it used to be before. Previously, graduates would be deployed straight from college to schools, but nowadays, one will have to look for a place after qualifying.”

Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association president Richard Gundane said the move by the government was commendable.

“Generally, the country is short of science and mathematics teachers. That should be what has prompted government to call for eligible candidates to approach their district offices,” Gundane said.

“In our system, maths and science teachers have become less because they have migrated to other countries, so it is important for government to employ more teachers so that we have better pass rates.” – NewsDay
